Not just surviving but thriving - on educating and supporting teachers in the current era

*The English explanation is at the lower part of the page.

Good teacher education remains critical for quality education. That is even more true in times of international teacher shortage. Teacher attrition is one key aspect of the problem, given the large number of teacher turnover during the first 5 years of their career. Teacher retention -the other side of the coin- becomes the essential challenge.

From a deficit approach to an opportunity perspective: the need for both teacher and school development (Geert Kelchtermans)

“How to avoid that good teachers leave teaching for the wrong reasons?”. With this line Prof. dr. Kelchtermans defined the attrition/retention issue about a decade ago. In his lecture he revisits his analysis including the research from the past ten years which has further contributed evidence for criticizing the deficit view on early career teachers (ECTs) and the potential of the opportunity perspective. Embracing ECTs’ as a potential asset to the school instead of focussing on remediating their assumed lack of expertise remains a necessary mindshift for policy makers, teacher educators and mentors in order to provide effective and sustainable working conditions in schools.

Supporting reflective experiential learning during practicum: the potential and pitfalls of the portfolio (Ann Deketelaere)

dr. Deketelaere addresses the issue from a more practice based angle as she argues for the central role of reflection as an essential skill and attitude for (student) teachers’ professional development, more in particular their experiential learning during the practicum. She starts by explaining the concept of broad and deep reflection and further explains how the learning portfolio constitutes a powerful pedagogical instrument to support and strengthen that professional development. Drawing on her own and international research, as well as on her experiences as a teacher educator and a trainer in medical education she illustrates the workings of the portfolio, its possibilities and advises on the do’s and don’ts.
